What are my options for home health aide training in Norwalk?

Home health aide hopefuls in Norwalk have two main paths: a Certified Nurse Aide program at the CT State Norwalk campus, or a 75-hour training program run by a Connecticut home health agency. Connecticut has required 75 hours of training plus a competency evaluation since 1993, and finishing a nurse aide program can satisfy part of that requirement.

Train at the CT State Norwalk campus

CT State Community College’s Norwalk campus sits at 188 Richards Ave. It is one of the system’s locations for the statewide Certified Nurse Aide program, described by the college as preparing students for the State of Connecticut CNA exam and the Nurse Aide Registry.

The Norwalk campus shows up on more than one of CT State’s program pages, alongside system locations such as Housatonic and Naugatuck Valley. Under Connecticut regulation, a completed nurse aide program counts toward the separate home health aide training requirement described below.

Or complete a 75-hour home health aide program

Since January 1, 1993, Connecticut has barred anyone from providing home health aide services for a home health care agency without finishing a training and competency evaluation program the Department of Public Health approved. That program has to run at least 75 hours.

The curriculum mixes classroom time with clinical practice and covers subjects such as communication skills, basic infection control, safe transfer techniques, and adequate nutrition and fluid intake. A registered nurse with at least two years of nursing experience, one of them in home health care, must run the competency evaluation.

If you plan to work for a Medicare-certified home health agency instead, federal rule sets the same 75-hour floor, split so at least 16 hours of classroom instruction comes before at least 16 hours of supervised practical training.

  • Communication skills and reporting
  • Basic infection control procedures
  • Safe transfer techniques and ambulation
  • Normal range of motion and positioning
  • Adequate nutrition and fluid intake

More questions

Is the Norwalk campus the only CT State site for this program?

No. The Certified Nurse Aide program also runs at other CT State campuses, including Housatonic and Naugatuck Valley.

Do home health aide jobs always require a high school diploma?

Usually, though BLS notes that some positions do not require a formal educational credential.

Can a nurse aide certification substitute for home health aide training?

Yes, Connecticut regulation treats a completed nurse’s aide program as meeting the home health aide training requirement, but you still have to pass a separate homemaker-home health aide competency evaluation first.
